A form of the Western Red Cedar, Thuja plicata Atrovirens is an important timber tree in its native North America, although it is more commonly used as a hedging conifer in the UK. Introduced in the mid 1870s, it won the Award of Garden Merit in 2002.

This large conifer is suited to most soil types however doesn best on moist to well drained soil like most evergreens.

Its shiny, green foliage is sometimes likened to the smell of pineapple when crushed.

Of pyramidal form if grown as a specimen tree, it is also a fine subject for hedging and often used as an altnerative to Leyland Cypress however it is slower growing.

Thuja plicata Atrovirens is a large tree at maturity good for parks and gardens.
