Product details
Juglans nigra is an impressive Walnut tree that was introduced from Central and Eastern America to Europe in 1629.
The foliage of the Black Walnut is very different to the Common Walnut, exhibiting a leaf which consists of up to 23 leaflets, making them long and Ash like in appearance.
The nuts are produced in abundance as the summer progresses and are contained in a very hard shell, so are not too easy for squirrels to squander!
The grey bark has a rough and distinctive texture to it, distinguishing it further from the smooth barked Juglans regia. In the autumn time the leaves turn yellow before falling.
Juglans nigra is relatively late into leaf, preferring to wait until the soil has warmed before emerging, so do not panic if your tree is looking a little bare when everything else is springing to life!
This tree is large and broad at maturity; the US Champion is in Oregon and stands at 44m high x 47m wide, so please allow this tree plenty of room if you considering planting.
It is well suited to planting in parklands and estates.
The Black Walnut will grow on most soils, performing best on deep loam.
Mature Height: 20+
