Product details

Acer campestre Nanum is a compact and dense clone of the native favourite, Acer campestre.

Also known as the Dwarf Field Maple or Acer campestre Compactum, this tree has been growing in the UK since the late 1830’s.  It is very useful planted in confined spaces, owing to the fact it has a small crown, which is unlikely to spread more than 3m, even at maturity.  This tree has dark green leaves that are smaller in size than the species, turning to an attractive orange yellow in the autumn.

At Barcham, we grow this compact tree with a 1.8-2m clear stem, meaning the foliage will sit well above the fence line for screening purposes. This is also useful if looking to plant the Nanum as a feature tree leaving ample space underneath to utilise for underplanting.

Acer campestre Nanum is a fairly slow growing cultivar of Field Maple, consolidating its use in areas where space is at a premium.  This is by no means a detriment to the stalwart nature of this little tree as despite the fact it is a slow grower, it will do well in virtually any soil type and tolerate drought, soil compaction and air pollution.

Mature height: 3-7m
